Bollywood’s brands mismatched
Bollywood’s brands mismatched
Bollywood stars are India's biggest peddlers. From cars to cooking oils, from network services to food they are an advertiser's dream. But most often these celebrities are roped in without much thought to the brand and the star's image.
I mean, how many people believe that Shah Rukh Khan drives a Santro or that Kajol gives technology tips to people.
So we are listing out some of Bollywood's best stars who are complete misfits for some of the best known brands.
Akshaye Khanna
This dimpled-cheek actor is one of Bollywoods most classy personalities. He is sober, suave and chic. Not just in real life, Akshaye plays a gentleman even on-screen. Be it movies like Taal or Dil Chahta Hain, this man sums up as a modern individual who respects values.
All this undoubtedly makes him a dream package for brand managers. However, if theres one brand he can never sell, its Navratna tel – thanda thanda cool cool. If you are still asking why, well it's because the actor is quite bold about his baldness.
Ajay Devgan
An action hero, he gained another level of fame after marrying Kuch Kuch Hota Hai girl, Kajol. Known as a rough and tough guy and a strong believer in the institution of family, he is someone the conservative Indian middle-class identifies with. This made Tata Indicom rope him as their brand ambassador along with wife Kajol.
While we do not doubt his role in popularising the telecom company's services, there's another FMCG product that would definitely see a drop in sales if they hired Ajay for endorsements. Yes, its apna very own suraksha chakra Colgate. Completely different from Kajol in this regard, the actor doesn't have a clean good set of teeth nor a sparkling smile to boast of.
On the contrary, his smile is mostly a forced one.
Kunal Kapoor
Rang De Basanti’s hottest hunk, Kunal Kapoor has been recently endorsing Indian Terrain, a men’s apparel brand. Why? Coz he is rugged, smart, down-to-earth, non-fussy and adaptable. Every young girl’s dream guy and every other man’s fashion idol, there’s one product even his biggest fan wouldn’t want to see him selling.
The man with the long locks and a there-forever stubble would be a disastrous choice for selling Gillette – The best a man can get.
Nana Patekar
The messiah of mill workers and their likes, Nana Patekar stands for the aam aadmi. His style is say-it-straight in the face.
Nana is the goat-turned-wolf to survive in the big bad world. A far cry from stereotype heroes, Nana has a huge fan following. Though they love him for his attitude, his looks are not exactly worth dying for. So while he may be able to sell value-for-money brands to the lower-middle class audience, there’s one product for which consumers would never trust him.
No points for guessing this one – Fair and Handsome.
Salman Khan
One of Bollywood’s most favoutire stars, Salman Khan needs no introduction. A well-chiselled body and always a lovely lady by his arm, he never fails to make a fashion statement. However, he is also destiny’s favourite controversy child.
For being in news about his fights with ex-girlfriend Aishwarya Rai to getting involved in legal court cases for poaching and drunk driving, the actor has always had it unsteady.
While this has not affected his appeal factor among the audiences, he is certainly not associated with safety and security. One can only imagine the outcome if Salman chose to promote Bisleri – Play safe.
Sushmita Sen
The gorgeous actress is known for her independent attitude towards life. Hardly seen running around the trees in movies, Sushmita’s career portfolio includes offbeat films like Filhaal and Zindaggi Rocks. Not many actresses run the risk of becoming a single mother to an adopted kid, but this woman believes in going by her gut feelings.
Not just this, she is known for believing in no-strings-attached relationships and a life of no compromise. Though this stunning lady is promoting diamonds as a girl’s best friend, she stands little chance when it comes to matrimonial site Shaadi.com.
Prospective mother-in-laws would almost faint at the thought of hunting brides on a site that is promoted by Sushmita Sen who would pose for promotions along with daughter Renee.
